Today’s grateful guest post is from Leah Yorston.
Thanks for sharing your gratitude Leah!
Over the weekend, my pessimistic assumptions were challenged by a stranger. While running errands, I made a quick stop at a gas station. I was so consumed with my own thoughts that at first I didn’t notice the stranger trying to get my attention. “Excuse me, miss?” interrupted my internal to-do list monologue. I turned to see an older man in a wheel chair. He looked worn and down trodden, and I found myself mentally counting the change in my purse, preparing for his sad story and request for help.
Once he had my attention I realized that he was smiling and actually appeared to be quite content. He asked if I had any pets, and I told him I did. Then he asked if I would like to hear a joke, which he proceeded to tell:
The question: What do you call a pile of baby kittens?
The answer: A Meow-tain
He laughed and slapped his knee, and I laughed along with him. He told me a friend had told him that joke recently and he had just been dying to share it because he found it so funny. He wished me a good afternoon and went on his way. I smiled to myself for the rest of the afternoon. Not because the joke was particularly funny, but because it made me so happy that a stranger would go out of his way to share a joke and a laugh with me.
A simple smile and a wave to a stranger can go a long way. We all have to co-exist on this earth, so let’s make an effort to help each other live happily! So as I go about my day today, I’ll do so with a friendly smile.
